Production!! - Progression of pages

Progression and development of my pages!!

In order to keep this as one big post i made a JPEG of each of my pages once they got to a certain stage and this was done until i got the final completed page.

This was what my magazine cover look like at the beginning as soon as i had taken my pictures and began to make my cover. In this i had yet not decided fully on what my articles where going to be as all that had been planned but not chosen. I had a fixed idea of what was going to be on my magazine cover and therefore, i hit the ground running and made a lot of progress at the beginning.

At this stage I felt as though my main cover was completed as i had everything on their that i had needed and had completed everything  that i had intended to do as i had placed on the articles which are conventional of a magazine cover and also added a special offer tag which some magazines have. However, on closer inspection i found that the writing was not fully legible and therefore, had to change the font. I also decided on having a strap line underneath the main header as this is also a convention of magazine covers.

After finding a suitable and legible font for my magazine cover to me it did not look as lively as before and so i played with the layout of the articles a little bit and in the end this was the formot that i chose for my final main cover. I also

Next I had to create a contents page to list all the the content of my magazine and to begin with i decided on creatinf the layout first and then adding my image as the focus of a contents page is to advertise the content. this is what I came up with after testing different fonts etc.

Luckily the layout for my contents page had already been decided and i had already created a draft of my contents page to make it easier for me to decide on how to make it look when i actually came round to creating it. The colour scheme was also quite easy as i just followed the colour scheme that had been set on my main cover along with most of the content which i had to advertise on the main cover.

This is what my contents page looked like after i had taken and edited and then added the correct image into it. After this was created i was not fully satisfied as my contents page still looked slightly empty and so i had to make some changes.

In the end i decided on adding the main heading into the black margin as i though this made the contents page look much more lively and appealing and i also added the number of the page that the image on my contents of the article that this image linked too. Overall, i feel as though my contents page fulfils its purpose well.

Finally i had to create my article this time due to the fact that i had a lot of writing to add i put the images that i took on first to give me a rough idea on how long my article should be. The layout was again quite simple as the draft i made to give me an idea of how to make my article look worked perfectly.

This is what my article looked before i added the text and this layout followed my draft perfectly.

This is what my main article looked like after i had added the text at first i thought i had completed it but it did not look fully like a magazine article and therefore, i created a background to go with the colour scheme and to make the article look more appealing on photoshop.

My final completed article looked like this after i had added the green and grey background which i felt suited the colour scheme and added some more colour to the article.

Production!! - Changes/Challenges

Changes and Challenges along the way!!

Changes to the main cover!!

Well there have not been many changes to my work i had made my mind up from the start of what i wanted to accomplish however, as any project you have to make adjustments based on what you have to work with so there have been some changes to my work since when i started. Originally my main idea was to have the model i chose for my main article to be standing against a wall during the day however, upon getting to the point where i had to take my pictures i changed my mind as i found this too conventional however, still liked the idea and so did the same but for the second image of the artist that i was going to have on my contents page. I chose to make my model pose in a park up against a tree for a number of reasons the first one being the green colors in the park mixed with the bright lighting really suited the color scheme of my magazine and therefore, made it desirable. The second reason why i chose to have it in the park was because of the connotations it carries which is that it says to the reader of how the artist is a natural talent which i liked the idea of.

Also on my main cover originally the strap line "Enter the Beat Zone" was not planned that came about when i was reading up on the conventions of a magazine and also after research i found that a magazine should have a strap line that carries the theme of the title and therefore, that is how the strap line was made.

Another major change that impacted the look of my magazine cover was that the font that i had originally placed after analysis was not easily readable and therefore, needed to be changed. After the font was changed the over all look of the text on the page looked too simple and so the layout of the text was arranged a little to make the magazine cover more appealing and to add the excitement on the magazine again.

Changes to the Contents Page!!

Again there where not many changes made to my contents page the basis of what i wanted was present and followed the trend of the draft contents page that i had made however, after it was completed it looked overly simplistic and therefore, where i had kept the black margin i added the heading of the magazine that was on the main cover ( Beat Zone) in the black margin except this time i rotated it vertically so it would look more interesting. This made the contents page look slightly more interesting as it also added color and extended my intended color scheme.

Changes to my article!!

The layout for my article was already decided before i had created it and in terms of the pictures that was all going according to plan apart from the picture of my model sitting in the chair this picture had been changed numerous times as it did not suite the over all look of my main article.

Also the article itself came out too short and therefore, the only change that i needed for this was too make it a paragraph longer and too add a bit more text here and there.

In terms of changes my project went well because there where not many changes that needed to be done to my project only very minor changes needed to be done.

Challenges!!

The main challenge when it came to my project was making everything work with each other as i had a set number of ideas however, when it came to putting them together this was difficult. Also when it came to taking my pictures this was a challenge as i did not know what type of setting to have my picture in and also in what stance i should have my model posing for me in.

In conclusion apart from what was explained the project went well.

Production!! - Raw shots

Raw shots!!

Luckily the image that i am going to use for my main cover turned out brilliantly and does not need any editing just simply a bit of cropping.

In this image my model is leaning up against a tree with one leg resting on it. Luckily the lighting was perfect and the light covered half of his body whilst leaving the other half in the shade. The other shots that where taken on the day where just shots that where trying to find the best look and pose i took about 3 tester photos:

Above are some tester photo's that i took do determine the correct lighting, pose for my model, the type of background i wanted to choose etc. However, these photo's also came in handy in my equipment list as they where cropped and added against each prop e.g. headphones. The only manipulating that where done to these where some cropping which can be seen in my equipment post.

The other pictures that where taken at this photo shoot where for the side pictures that i was going to have on my article and again these pictures turned out perfect after testing around in different light with the camera's. These images simply needed a bit of cropping and resizing so they would fit onto my article.

The following photo shoot was the  images that where needed for my contents page and required another model. This image was taken outside college against a wall and these image although turned out well needed some adjusting to the contrast and needed cropping.

These where the three images that i chose could possibly become my contents page picture. My aim of this picture was to have my model position his head off camera at different angles to show off his profile. I chose to have the first image as my contents image as i found that image showed off his profile best and also his posture was the best in that image. However, this image needed some editing as can be seen to remove the bin on the right hand side and also to adjust the lighting to make it slightly darker.

This picture needed cropping to remove the edge of the wall which was on the left and then the bin which was on the right to make it suitable for my contents page. This is how the image looked once this was done. Following this as you can see the lighting was not right and therefore, i needed to adjust the contrast of this image and this was done in photoshop.

Finally after this editing was completed this is how the final image looked and it was then put onto my contents page. This image was more appropriate for my contents page as it is in much more detail and the sharpness is slightly better as it was adjusted in photoshop after the contrast had been adjusted.

These images where taken for my main article and they where taken in landscape as this is the format that i wanted for this picture. Again luckily enough these images turned out exactly how i would of liked and therefore, did not need much editing done to them. Overall to these images i simply needed to crop the sides off a little to get it to the size i wanted and also so it would fit onto my article. For my main article i chose the second picture (the one on the left) as this sent the message that i wanted to portray to the reader best.

Planning!! - Mock up pages

Mock up pages of my magazine!!

In order to give me a more clearly direction in how to make my magazine cover, contents page and article look i need to create  hand drawn mock up pages. Firstly i need to draw a mock up main cover and in this i plan on having just one main image of my artist in the centre in a very traditional pose for a young male as he will be leaning against a tree with one leg up against in as shown below.

As seen on many covers before i am going to have the top of his head slightly overlapping the main header of my magazine and this will not only look more modernised but show off my editing skills. I want my cover to look appealing and yet simple so therefore, i am going to keep the contents along with my feature article on the left hand side at the bottom in a simple paragraph based format. The web address which needs to be present on a magazine cover will be at the bottom so as the reader reads through the contents of the magazine the next thing they will see is the website which is also good advertising. Finally the bar code i feel as though i want it in the bottom right hand side as that side looked very empty and i want this bar code to be vertical which is now a days conventional of a magazine.

The next mock up is of my contents page.

Again i want to keep my contents page very simple and yet still affective and therefore, i just want to have one image on it in the bottom left hand corner of of my second artist. Following the colour scheme of my magazine i want to make a black margin the same size in width as my image in the bottom left hand corner but this margin will go straight to the top of the page. I want the title 'contents' to be at the top of the page as conventional and then underneath the header right to the bottom of the page the numbered contents of the magazine.

The Final mock up is of my main article.

I am aware that for my project there need to be a minimum of four original images within the whole project that is why i am going to add three images in my main article of my main artist. The fair image on the right i am going to have landscape so i can have some text underneath ot which follows a similar pattern to other magazines. The two images on the left hand side i am going to have portrait so they only take up one column and leave room for the heading which i am keeping at the top next to the first image in the column so it is easily visible. I am keeping the layout of all my pages very simple to keep focus on my images and text and so the colour scheme would appeal more.

Planning!! - Photo shoot

The Photo Shoot!!

For my photo shoot I had planned on  finding a suitable area in which goes with the over all theme of my magazine cover, Firstly i planned on having my main star leaning against a brick wall however, i changed this plan to having them in a park up against a tree therefore, this was more suitable with my overall green theme and also this would connote to the reader how my main star is a natural talent and this is why i chose to have my first photo shoot in this location.

The props and costumes that where needed for this photo shoot where simple as to keep my main character in the theme of my magazine i had him wear a lime green top with an abstract penguin on it which would connote youth and still keep with the theme of my magazine cover. This item needed to be borrowed by a friend as it matched my theme and luckily fit my main artist perfectly.

Another major prop that made it clear to the audience that my main character was a DJ where the lime green headphones which where worn during the photo shoot as this is a music magazine and also because they too where in keeping with my over all theme of my magazine cover. These headphones where already my main characters and where suggested by him and i found that it added well to his overall image.

Furthermore, another prop that was used in the overall image of my main artist where some topless blue gloves which connoted the fashion side of my main character which would amplify my characters overall appeal as he is still young and in keeping with trends. This could even connote the image of my main character being a trend setter being with the clothing and accessories.

A final prop that was used in this magazine was a lime green chair in an environment with a lime green backdrop. This was a brilliant spot to hold the photo shoot for a side image as it is completely lime green and follows the colour scheme of my magazine.

The Second Photo Shoot!

The second photo shoot was taken with my original plan of having my model leaning against a wall and this was because i felt as though it would suite the over all look of my magazine whilst highlighting the importance of my model and the character that he was portraying.

Further costumes that where used in my second photo shoot where similarly to the first first model a pair of earphones however, these where different and much smaller this was because this model was posing for one of the more minor characters in my magazine which was going to be situated on the contents page. These again where chosen to match the theme of my magazine as one of the main colours where lime green.

Following this a costume item that was used in the second photo shoot was a black T-shirt that with a lime green face on it. The black and lime green really go well together and the face really stood out on the T - shirt again this was to be in keeping with the theme of the magazine and again similarly to the first model connotes trend and fashion to the audience.

Finally a costume prop that was used in the second photo shoot was a white jacket which was lined with a lime green zippier which gave the final touches to the second models over all look. This was also chosen to remain with the theme of the magazine.

The Third Photo shoot!

Finally there was a final photo shoot which was taken for the main article of my magazine cover. This image was taken from high ground over looking the town with the model looking towards view and having his arms out freely. This was chosen like this to connote how my main star has high hopes and wishes to rise to the top and be the best. This pose on of this character was to connote being free and confident which i feel was done well.

A final costume change was required for this photo shoot and this was the purple top and this was to show indifference in the fully green surroundings and also as this matched the colour scheme of my magazine.

There where only two models in my magazine and these where chosen due to their overall appearance and persona. First of all my main model was chosen due to his unusual appearance in terms of hair, his hair is more then unusual and i found suited the type of character that i was trying to portray in my magazine. Also his look shows confidence which i wanted my model to have.

My second model was chosen due to his overall appearance as he has a strong and masculine appearance which i felt suited the role again that i was looking for, I also felt as though his appearance would appeal to the female audience which would also enhance the appeal of my magazine.

The models and costumes used where all original and where chosen for the appeal of my magazine.

Planning!! - Moodboard

Creating a Mood Board!

In creating a mood board i had to choose interesting fonts, images, poses, colours that i like and may carry forward onto having on my magazine cover, Firstly i chose to have the mixmag cover on my mood board because the colour scheme along with the model look very appealing and inviting towards the reader to pick it up in a shop, Also the sex appeal is played well on this cover as the model is fairly attractive and would grab the attention of any male readers. Following this is the image of David Guetta i chose to have this image as this artist looks very powerful and happy in his environment. His pose is very interesting as he seems to be enjoying freely what he is doing and he is already very recognised which therefore, suggests to me that he is rising in popularity and fame. Beside this image is a picture of a recognised dance musician called Basshunter and the reason why i chose this image was the colour scheme along with his outfit look very appealing and compliment his posture and facial expression. Overall, this image attracts attention and gives off a very positive persona which was one of the main reasons why i chose this image. Following this underneath this image is a picture of an issue of NME magazine. This image looks very interesting as the colour scheme look appealing along with all the males that are present on the cover. The males are all good looking and therefore, add the sex appeal for females and so would grab attention. The next picture is of an artist called Calvin Harris and the reason why i chose this image is due to its unique style in which it portrays the artists characteristics and persona. I feel as though this would give me direction in how to make my models image. Another image that i saw because of its colour scheme and design is the image of owl city this image looks very appealing and again grabs the readers attention whilst amplifying the artists unique image. There is also an image of Iyaz and this image shows off his importanct as his pose is very masculine and strong and i chose this image to give me an idea of posture for my artist. I also chose to add images of JLS and Beyonce because they are typical artists that carry the sex appeal for both males in the case of beyonce and females in the case of JLS and i feel these images give me good direction in what type of image i should have on my front cover to attract attention.

Planning!! - Name

A Magazine Name!

In order to make sure the appeal of my magazine is at maximum I simply made a survey which contained a few names for my magazine and i asked a total of 20 people to determine the appropriate name for my magazine and this is what I found. I chose to name the magazine Beat Zone and after questioning a maximum of 20 people i found that 17 liked the name Beat Zone whilst the other 3 found it too simple. Following this i asked the question that whether they would purchase a magazine that was named Beat Zone and 15 out of the 20 said yes this was because the remaining 5 do not regularly buy magazines.

Overall, I found that Beat Zone is a successful name for my magazine and suites the contents and genre of my magazine as the main aspect of my magazine is specialising in dance music/artists.
